Crap is good is a young blog that writes about an emerging and constantly growing niche within all fields of design. In today's over-designed, visual culture, a counter-flow is appearing. With the title "Crap is good" we name a common thought, and sence of aesthetics.

Márcia  Novais was asked to do the poster and the publication for the Printmaking meeting. I collaborated with Carlos Azeredo Mesquita and Diogo Tudela for the etching both in the posters and dust cover.
About the process of the etching “The construction of the image began in the deepest ends of digital media, being a result of an application conceived to generate pictures according to some general guidelines, to an abstract idea of what the composition should look like in the end. That application was responsible for creating 20 different graphic solutions that were printed, and from which 4 were selected to be used in the final version of the posters. After that selection, the chosen images were reconverted to code and plotted into varnish covered plates with a stylus. Like in traditional etching, the stylus doesn’t scratch the metal, only the varnish that covers it. The image gets engraved in the plate through acidulation, as the acid only attacks the exposed areas of the plate.”
The text was put in the poster in a way that didn’t interfere with the etching, mainly because of its nature and the difficulty of printing over it.
The book was printed in one color (black) and it is an A5 format. It was really important to maintain the relation between both the poster and the publication.

  3. Eyes On The Prize deals with the differences and similarities between the fields of sports and the arts and applies the rules of the game to the unwritten laws of the visual arts.
Guestcurator: Bas Hendrikx (NL)Kasper Jacobs (NL), Yarre Stooker (NL), Bas Schevers (NL), Harry Meadley (UK), Alex Farrar (UK)
The projectconsists of a residency-period for the artists, an exhibition in the MariaChapel and an additional programme with a Wingstyle League Tournament and screenings of the UEFA 2012.
Eyes On The Prize creates a clear connection between the themes of sports, competition and visual arts. Themes used by the artists include ‘the game’, ‘elite sports’ and ‘dueling’. By linking a popular topic such as sports to the arts, HMK explores the roles art can play, both inside and out the Chapel.
For his project Bas Schevers will be coached by artist André Kok, Kasper Jacobs will collaborate with locals on the script for a new video work, Yarre Stooker organises a Wingstyle Linefootball league, a sport developed by the artist, and Alex Farrar and Harry Meadley will start a collaboration based on the ‘Code Duello’; a set of 19th century rules for one-on-one combats. In their work competition is not just a subject, but also defines their way of working.

The InMono by Jonas Ersland is a small contact-microphone-amplifier intended to be permanently placed on metal objects in public space. The very simple electronic circuit (only six components are used in total) generates soundwaves from vibrations naturally occurring in public objects like steel-constructions, fences and bridges.  Passer-bys can plug in their own headphones and experience  sounds in their surroundings that they didn’t know of. I built five InMonos which I attached to especially nice-sounding spots around Oslo. The sounds vary between the different locations, but it’s basically a deep and dry sound, like the song of a mechanical whale.

The poster series “The Zukunft Series” deals with the future. an asymmetric line-up of alltogether 11 students, young Graphic Designers, artists and international reclaimed Designers from Offenbach, Frankfurt, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Rom, Luzern, Novi Sad, London and Leeds were invited to design the future.
The connecting link between all the posters is the font “Zukunft” designed by Lorenz Klingebiel. The combination of the two opposed typefaces “Garamond” and “Grotesque” is supposed to be a contemporary re-interpretation of the typographic view on the future in the tradition of “Futura” (by Paul Renner; 1927) and “Avenir” (by Adrian Frutiger; 1988).
They can be purchased singulary (25 each; 6€) or in the “complete collection” (25x; packaged in a timeless mailing tube; 60€)
Meet all the 11 designers at read more!
